A blepharoplasty is one of the most common medical and cosmetic surgeries done on the face. It is effective at giving a more youthful appearance without the trauma of a major facelift. In addition, removing the excess, hanging skin can sometimes significantly improve one’s peripheral vision. If severely affecting a patient’s vision, the procedure is covered by insurance. Done in-office, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area and the surgery takes approximately 30 minutes to perform.
The surgeon creates small incisions in the eyelids to remove excess skin and fatty tissue as well as reinforcing the corresponding muscle tissues. The incisions are made in the creases of the lid to minimize scar appearance. After the procedure, there will be minimal to moderate bruising and swelling around the eyelids lasting 1-2 weeks.
Blepharoplasty surgery can treat:
- Sagging, redundant skin which impairs vision
- Puffiness and heaviness of the upper eyelids
